Jamie Oliver Food Revolution – Not Only A TV Show

Famous chef Jamie Oliver is well known for his amazing and delicious recipes as well as for his different culinary expeditions and programs he made around the world. I remember watching him the first time on “Cuisine TV” which is a french cooking channel broadcasting different types of chefs sharing their recipes as well as anyone who has a passion for cooking and who can invent recipes. I pretty like the way he made everything look so easy just by combining different ingredients fast and the end result is a mouthwatering dish.

Not too long ago, one of his culinary shows titled “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution” caught my attention and raised my interest. This show was filmed in America and consisted of several parts. I followed it till the end. What I would like to say is this isn’t just a TV show to watch and when it ends, you just forget about it. It’s an educational culinary program and a movement at its best and its main goal is to educate people to change their eating habits into a healthier one. Obesity in America is one of the highest in the world and this is due to the population unhealthy eating habits and reliance on junk foods. Young children are also not spared as well from these bad eating habits.

When Jamie Oliver paid a visit to one of the local children’s schools, he was appalled to see what they were eating for lunch practically everyday. French fries, pizzas and chicken nuggets were some of the favorite foods on the menu. Eating these kinds of foods on a regular basis increase your chances of becoming overweight or obese in the long run and consequently triggering health issues. Jamie Oliver knows this and wanted to change this school’s eating habits by implementing freshly cooked meals instead of processed foods in the system but unfortunately it wasn’t easy as his first attempt was unsuccessful. His recipes were good and healthy but the children simply didn’t like them because they were so accustomed to the junk foods. Needless to say, this was a long struggling battle not only with the children but with one of the school cooks as well who thought this was too much work to prepare recipes with fresh ingredients on a large scale. This is why the fast food model was more ideal.

Jamie Oliver wanted to raise awareness of this major problem in America by starting in the schools and implementing change. He even contacted the local radio to bring up this issue but he faced major roadblocks. One of his visits in the secondary school brought some hope as he managed to bring together a group of teenagers, taught them some healthy recipes and they were going to host a dinner whose objective was to get people to support this program. The senator was one of the invited guests. After dinner, some of them made a speech on obesity and its dangers to health while even narrating their own experiences relating to this issue. One obese teenager was thankful to Jamie for the program he was trying to set up.

Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution can’t be successful on its own. Everyone needs to make an effort. People need to cooperate if they want to initiate change. Fortunately, Jamie has been able to get a team of professionals to hop into this food revolution bandwagon. Each one is doing his or her own job to change the way school kids eat. By offering guidance and advice, these professionals can show you how to get a team of experts in your own school area. They have the experience in making people work together ranging from the food suppliers to the cooks, the nutrition team at school, the parents and children.

I can only say hats off to Jamie Oliver who has done a wonderful job. By starting to implement this change in the schools, you’re tackling the problem at its roots. If we inculcate good eating habits in people when they are still young, they will get used to it with time and even appreciate what it’s like to eat healthy food. Our kids are our future and they are the next generation. Obesity is a serious disease and if people can change their eating habits, they can add many more years to their lives.
